What Needl.ai does for a credit team

The quarter's figures, spread and cited

Management accounts, compliance certificates, board decks and workbooks, read in full with a source on every figure.

Covenants tested on the agreement's terms

Each ratio recomputed on the credit agreement's own definition of EBITDA, with the headroom on every test.

Signals graded before a breach

News, litigation and filings on the borrower, its sponsor and its sector, graded by priority with the reason.

Answers from the file, with the passage

Ask the room a question and get the answer with the passages it came from and the whole document one click away.

Quarter-end is a reading problem before it is a credit problem

A fund with a hundred or more borrowers receives a package from each of them every month or quarter. None of it arrives in the same format twice, and the credit agreement decides what every number means.

Connect the borrower's folder on Google Drive or OneDrive, or upload the files. Every document is read in full, large rooms sync in batches and resume, and a package that lands after the last review is flagged as new.

The management accounts, the compliance certificate and the board deck are read page by page, and the workbooks tab by tab. Revenue, EBITDA, debt, liquidity and cash come out with the page or cell they came from, set beside the budget and the underwriting case.

The covenant register lists each covenant with its level and test frequency, then recomputes the ratios on the agreement's own EBITDA: the bridge from reported earnings through every add-back, the headroom on each test, and how far earnings can fall before one fails.

Amendments, waivers and repricings are drawn from the documents into one history. A tracker on the borrower, its sponsor and its sector grades news, litigation and filings by priority with the reason, and sends alerts as they happen or a daily digest.

A review per borrower in your memo structure, with the committee question answered and a citation behind every figure. Export it as a document, share a link, or ask the file a question and get a cited answer.

Everything a monitored loan needs

The same reading that runs at underwriting in AI Due Diligence, run again each time a borrower reports.

A covenant register per borrower

Financial, negative, affirmative and incurrence covenants with their levels and test frequency, read from the agreement and its amendments.

Earnings as the agreement defines them

The bridge from reported EBITDA through each permitted add-back to the figure the covenants divide by.

Compliance certificates read

The certificate's own covenant calculations are set against the figures in the accounts, so a difference shows at once.

Claim ranking and collateral

Where each instrument sits in the capital structure, and how many times the collateral pool covers the senior claim.

Amendments and waivers in one history

Every amendment, waiver and repricing drawn from the documents, with its date and what it changed.

Between packages, the room keeps watch

Spreadsheets cited to the cell

Operating models and reporting workbooks are read tab by tab, and each figure cites its sheet and range.

Changes since the last review

New and edited files are flagged in the room after each review, and the previous review stays readable beside the new one.

Trackers with the reason

News, litigation and filings on the borrower, its sponsor and its sector, graded high, medium or low with the evidence quote, by alert or daily digest.

Cited answers from the file

Ask the room a question and get the answer with the passages it came from, the quote highlighted.

The definition decides the number

A borrower certifies EBITDA with the add-backs it believes the agreement allows. Needl.ai recomputes it under the agreement's own definition, with the caps and exclusions the lender negotiated, and shows the difference before anyone signs off.

The two clinics closed after 30 September, so the add-back fails the period test. Both figures are kept side by side in the review, each cited to its source.

“Consolidated EBITDA” means, for any period, Consolidated Net Income plus interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation, plus pro forma adjustments, only for acquisitions closed within the relevant period, not to exceed 10% of Consolidated EBITDA…

Credit agreement · Section 1.01, Defined terms
Covenant EBITDA, as certified$13.5M
Under Section 1.01$11.9M−$1.6M

Harlow Veterinary Group, Q3 2026. Before the leverage test fails, EBITDA can fall $1.65M as certified and $0.05M under Section 1.01.

Every name on the book, read the same way

Each borrower is its own room. When a package lands, the room flags what is new and the review runs again, so the quarter ends as a list of what changed rather than a stack of PDFs.

Synced from its own reporting folder, in batches that resume, so a large book never has to be loaded twice.

New and edited files are flagged after each review. The previous review stays readable beside the new one.

Headroom that narrowed, a waiver requested, a level that steps down next quarter: the signals are graded, with the reason, before anyone opens a PDF.

Frequently asked questions

What credit teams ask before they put a borrower's folder in front of it.

What is portfolio monitoring in private credit?

Portfolio monitoring is the work a lender does after a loan closes: tracking whether each borrower is still performing and whether the lender is still protected. It covers the borrower's financial performance against the underwriting case, covenant compliance under the credit agreement, early warning signals, the quarterly valuation and reporting to the committee and to investors. On Needl.ai the documents behind that work are read, tested and cited for the analyst.

What does it read?

Management accounts, compliance certificates, board decks, budgets and lender presentations as PDF or Word, the credit agreement with its amendments and waivers, and operating models or reporting workbooks in Excel or Google Sheets, read tab by tab. Each borrower's files sit in a room synced from Google Drive or OneDrive, or uploaded directly, and Needl.ai flags the files that are new or edited after each review.

How are the covenants tested?

Each covenant is listed with its level and test frequency, and the ratios are recomputed on the credit agreement's own definition of EBITDA, add-backs included. The covenant page shows the headroom on every test, how far earnings can fall before one fails, and the amendment and waiver history. Needl.ai frames the position. The analyst and the committee make the call.

How do we check a figure?

Every figure carries a citation. Opening it shows the passage it came from with the quote highlighted, and the whole document is one click away. Figures taken from spreadsheets cite the sheet and the range. An answer that no document supports is marked so a reviewer knows to verify it, and Needl.ai keeps the previous review readable when a new package is read.

Does it replace our spreading template?

No. The underwriting case, the budget and your own template sit in the same room, and the quarter's figures are read against them with a source on each. The analyst still owns the spread and the judgement. What changes is that the extraction, the page-hunting and the first covenant test are done before the analyst opens the package, and on Needl.ai that work recurs each quarter without being redone by hand.

How does it work across a book of 150 names?

Each borrower is its own room, synced from its reporting folder. When a package lands, the room flags what is new, the review is run again and the previous version stays readable. Rooms sync in batches and resume, so quarter-end becomes a list of what changed rather than a stack of PDFs. Needl.ai keeps the question of which names need attention first a short one.

Where does it run?

In your own AWS or Azure account, as a dedicated single-tenant instance, or as Needl.ai SaaS. Every search respects the permissions each person already holds on the source documents, connector credentials are stored encrypted, and data is deleted on request. Needl.ai is audited to SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001. See Trust & Security.

Does it tell us whether to lend?

No. Needl.ai gives no view on whether to lend. It produces the evidence and the framing: the figures with their sources, the covenant position under the agreement's own terms, the signals graded with their reasons, and a cited review. The committee decides what to do with the loan.

We also hold listed names. Is that covered?

Listed holdings are watched by Corporate Announcement Alerts: filings sorted by event type, price moves judged against the market and a daily digest. Private credit monitoring reads a borrower's own reporting package and credit agreement instead. Needl.ai offers both, and each is set up on its own.
